Cyst treatment & removal
Cysts of the Finger & Wrist
If you have a bump on your fingers, hands, or wrist, there’s a good chance it’s a ganglion cyst. These cysts can be painful and unsightly, but are also relatively simple to treat or remove.

Common Cyst Signs, Symptoms and Complaints
Cysts are usually self-evident, but can be mistaken for other bumps or disorders. Cyst size fluctuates depending on activity. Here are several telltale signs to help identify common ganglion cysts:
- Bump over your knuckle or finger joints that increase or decrease in size based on activity
- Bump on the front or back of your wrist
- Indentations or deformities on your fingernails
- Pain related to the cyst
- Cysts can sometimes drain on their own and then reform
What are Cysts?
Sometimes, a tear in tissue covering a tendon or joint in your hand or wrist can result in bulging, which creates a small, fluid-filled lump or sac just beneath the surface of your skin – a cyst. Cysts are relatively common, and often appear at joints in your fingers, hands, or wrists, which can result in pain when moving that joint. Apart from the pain and aesthetic concerns cysts sometimes cause, they are usually harmless.

How Dr. Abeye Treats Cysts
Ganglion Cysts are Non-Cancerous and Highly Treatable
At Dr. Abeye’s clinic, we always begin with the most conservative, non-surgical approaches, increasing intervention levels as necessary to achieve relief from pain, increased strength and range of motion.
Non-Surgical Cyst Intervention: Steroid Injection
The cyst can sometimes be aspirated to decompress it. This is followed by a steroid injection into the cyst that can reduce its size and inflammation. This can sometimes eliminate the cyst.
Surgical Cyst Treatment: Cyst Excision
Not all cysts meet criteria for aspiration and drainage. When they don’t, or aren’t responsive to non-operative treatment, they can be surgically removed in a simple, outpatient procedure.
What to Expect
When you schedule an appointment with Dr. Abeye in our Oklahoma City clinic for diagnosis of potential cysts, you can expect a thorough examination of your hands and wrists, imaging (if necessary), a conversation about your symptoms and education about what is likely happening. You’ll receive a diagnosis, plan of action and any necessary medications.
