Alleviating chronic wrist pain with non-surgical interventions
De Quervain’s Syndrome/Tenosynovitis
If you experience pain and discomfort on the thumb side of your wrist, you may be suffering from De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, an inflammation of some of the tendons going to your thumb. Sometimes mistaken for carpal tunnel syndrome, De Quervain’s is characterized more by pain and loss of strength than numbness or tingling.

Common De Quervain’s Syndrome Signs, Symptoms and Complaints
De Quervain’s Syndrome has several telltale signs. Here are some common symptoms and complaints you might notice:
- Pain on the thumb side of your wrist
- Increased pain when twisting, grasping or making a fist
- Radiating pain from your thumb up the wrist
- A bump on the thumb side of the wrist
- Pain trying to move your thumb to the base of your small finger
- A sticking feeling when moving your thumb
What is De Quervain’s Syndrome?
Two of the tendons that help extend the thumb are held in place by a tendon sheath on the thumb side of your wrist. This sheath can sometimes constrict the tendons, causing pain and tenderness. This is known as De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis. Though classically seen in individuals caring for small children, this condition can occur in people of all ages.

How Dr. Abeye Treats De Quervain’s Syndrome
De Quervain’s Syndrome is Highly Treatable
At Dr. Abeye’s clinic, we always begin with the most conservative, non-surgical approaches, increasing intervention levels as necessary to achieve relief from pain, increased strength and range of motion.
Non-Operative De Quervain’s Intervention: Bracing
Simple bracing can help reduce wrist tendon inflammation and allow the area to heal.
Non-Surgical De Quervain’s Intervention: Steroid Injection
An injection of steroids into the affected area helps reduce inflammation, often resulting in pain relief and resolution of symptoms.
Surgical De Quervain’s Treatment: Surgical Release
In more aggressive cases of De Quervain’s that don’t respond to bracing or steroids, a small incision is made to cut the tight band that is pinching your tendons.
